The hill tracts are
comprised of three districts: Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari. They are
primarily populated by people from different indigenous groups. Most of the
hill tracts is hilly. Even though the heights of these hills are not much, it
is very different from the rest of the flat country.
About half of the
ethnic group population are Chakma, and most of the remainder are Marma and
Tipera. Among the ten much smaller groups (Murung, Tengchangya, Khumi, Lushai,
Pankhu, Bhom, Mogh, Kuki and Reang), the Murung stand out as being the most
ancient inhabitants of this area. Each of these tribes have very distinctive
rites, rituals and dress; the Chakma woman, for example, all wear indigo and
red-striped Sarongs. They have also own language and cultural pattern.
